Problems with Job Descriptions

Job description is a valuable tool for performing human resources management functions. Nevertheless, several problems are frequently associated with job description. It include the following problems:

  1. Sometimes, they are not updated as job duties or job specifications change.
  2. If they are poorly written, using vague rather than specific terms, they will provide little guidance to incumbents, supervisor, manager…
  3. They may violate the labor law by containing contents not related or violated.
  4. They can limit the scope of activities of incumbents, reducing organizational flexibility.

How to avoid them?

To avoid them, the employer must:

  1. Carefully consider the format and degree of detail to be used.
  2. Ensure that the descriptions are prepared with care such as be clear, accurate and sufficient for the intended purposes, using non-prejudicial language.
